TLDR Hawthorn-probiotic postbiotic may relieve constipation in elderly.
The study explored the effects of a hawthorn-probiotic postbiotic on constipation in aged KM mice induced by loperamide. The postbiotic alleviated constipation by regulating intestinal water and sodium metabolism, maintaining the intestinal barrier, promoting epithelial cell proliferation, reducing inflammatory responses, and improving short-chain fatty acid metabolism. It decreased toxic substances, increased beneficial ones, and reduced inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-17A. The study identified new targets like SULT1A1 and GLP-2r, with stable binding to secondary metabolites, suggesting the postbiotic's potential as a promising therapy for constipation in elderly populations.
