TLDR Older first-time mothers experience more postpartum symptoms and distress than younger ones.
The study analyzed symptom patterns in 114 first-time mothers over the first 3 months postpartum, revealing an average of 7.0 symptoms at 1 month, decreasing to 5.3 by 3 months. Common symptoms included lack of energy, worrying, pain, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, and feelings of irritability, sadness, or drowsiness, with lack of energy, irritability, pain, nervousness, and hair loss being the most distressing. Older mothers (≥ 35 years) experienced significantly more symptoms and distress than younger mothers. While most symptoms improved over time, some persisted, highlighting the need for frequent postpartum assessments and interventions, especially for older mothers, to prevent adverse health outcomes and ensure maternal-infant welfare.
