TLDR PPAR-γ signaling improves mitochondrial function in hair follicles, potentially affecting hair growth and aging.
The study investigated the role of PPAR-γ-mediated signaling in regulating mitochondrial energy metabolism in human hair follicles, using the selective PPAR-γ modulator N-acetyl-GED-0507-34-Levo. It found that N-acetyl-GED significantly up-regulated genes and proteins associated with mitochondrial function, particularly in outer root sheath keratinocytes, suggesting these cells are primary targets of PPAR-γ activation. Additionally, N-acetyl-GED induced catagen and decreased hair matrix keratinocyte proliferation, supporting the idea that hair follicles primarily engage in aerobic glycolysis. These findings suggested that PPAR-γ signaling could influence hair follicle energy metabolism, potentially offering insights into anti-aging treatments for hair follicles.
