TLDR Poliosis is common in severe alopecia areata but doesn't significantly affect overall prognosis.
This retrospective cohort study of 479 patients with alopecia areata found that 29.4% had poliosis, which was associated with older age, higher initial severity, and comorbidities such as hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Although poliosis was linked to a slightly poorer prognosis for hair regrowth, the difference was not statistically significant. The study concluded that poliosis was common in severe cases but did not significantly impact the overall prognosis, suggesting further research to confirm these findings.
