A natural protein-based functional hydrogel, developed using keratin, protocatechuic aldehyde, and zinc ions, shows promise in improving cutaneous nerve regeneration and diabetic wound healing. The hydrogel's unique structural design provides excellent injectability, skin adhesion, self-healing, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility. It also serves as a drug carrier for phellopterin (PP), a compound from traditional Chinese medicine, enabling sustained release. The PP-loaded hydrogel enhances nerve regeneration, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling in diabetic mice models, demonstrating significant potential for diabetic wound therapy through the synergistic effects of zinc ions and PP.
