Platelet-Rich Plasma, Low-Level Light Therapy and Microneedling for Hair Loss: An Integrative Review and Case Study

    This article reviews the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), low-level light therapy (LLLT), and microneedling as combined treatments for severe alopecia areata (AA) that is unresponsive to corticosteroids. It highlights a case study of a 36-year-old patient who developed alopecia totalis after a COVID-19 vaccination and did not respond to topical steroid therapy. The patient underwent a multimodal treatment protocol involving monthly PRP sessions, LLLT, and microneedling, supplemented by topical and oral agents, which resulted in significant hair regrowth and improved scalp coverage. The study suggests that these combined therapies may have synergistic effects and emphasizes the need for further controlled studies to establish optimal treatment strategies for refractory AA.
