TLDR Psychological interventions can improve mental health and quality of life in people with alopecia.
This systematic review evaluates the effects of psychological interventions on quality of life, mental health, and hair growth in individuals with alopecia areata and scarring alopecia, based on nine studies. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) improved quality of life and reduced anxiety and distress. Alopecia-specific collocated behavioral health (CLBH) treatment and hypnotherapy showed psychosocial improvements, with hypnotherapy also improving anxiety, depression, and quality of life, though evidence for hair growth was mixed. Psychotherapy combined with immunotherapy enhanced hair growth and self-confidence. The review underscores the need for further research to confirm the efficacy and optimal use of these interventions.
