TLDR Alopecia areata negatively affects the self-esteem and quality of life of children and teens.
Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder causing sudden hair loss, significantly impacts the self-esteem, body image, and quality of life of children and adolescents. A systematic review of 79 articles, with 10 meeting inclusion criteria, highlights the psychosocial challenges faced by these populations, including emotional distress and social difficulties. Factors such as stress, psychiatric comorbidities, and familial issues are associated with the condition. The studies reviewed were mostly short-term and varied, preventing comprehensive data analysis. Further research is needed to better understand these impacts and improve clinical support and interventions.
