TLDR Iranian girls in Isfahan typically start puberty around age 10, with menarche at 12.
This study investigated the onset of puberty in 13,886 healthy Iranian girls from Isfahan province, finding that the median age for menarche was 12.05 years, with breast development beginning at 9.89 years and pubic hair development at 10.14 years. The research indicates a trend towards earlier puberty, potentially linked to changes in nutritional status and lifestyle, such as increased childhood obesity. It suggests that puberty onset before 6.85 years should be considered precocious and emphasizes the need for nationally representative surveys and longitudinal studies to better understand pubertal timing for clinical assessments and international comparisons. Despite limitations like its cross-sectional design, the study highlights the importance of updated data to redefine puberty timing accurately.
