TLDR TikTok can educate about alopecia, but more accurate content from medical professionals is needed.
This study analyzed 100 TikTok videos about alopecia using the DISCERN tool to assess quality. Dermatologist-created videos had the highest quality scores but less engagement, while patient-created videos, despite lower quality, had higher engagement. There is a significant gap in representation, with 36% of videos not specifying an alopecia subtype and underrepresentation of scarring alopecias like CCCA and FFA. The study suggests TikTok can be valuable for dermatologic education but highlights the need for more accurate and inclusive content from medical professionals to improve patient education and representation.
