TLDR Phytochemicals may offer safer alternatives to synthetic drugs for prostate cancer treatment.
The review discussed the potential of phytochemicals as natural alternatives to synthetic 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5αRis) for prostate cancer treatment. Synthetic 5αRis like finasteride and dutasteride were effective but had adverse side effects, prompting interest in plant-derived alternatives. Phytochemicals such as phytosterols, polyphenols, and fatty acids were highlighted for their ability to inhibit 5αR isozymes and reduce prostate tumor growth. Compounds like β-sitosterol, quercetin, and catechins from green tea showed promise in studies for their anti-cancer properties and 5αR inhibition. The review emphasized the need for further research to validate these compounds as safer therapeutic options for prostate cancer.
