TLDR Religious headwear can cause hair loss, so dermatologists should offer culturally sensitive advice to prevent it.
The article discusses the association between religious headwear and alopecia, particularly traction alopecia, due to the ways headwear is worn and hairstyle practices underneath. Although there is limited research, the authors provide recommendations based on personal experiences to mitigate alopecia risk without compromising religious beliefs. They highlight that traction alopecia can result from tension caused by headwear, such as hijabs, sheitels, turbans, and dreadlocks. The article emphasizes the importance of culturally competent care by dermatologists to address and prevent headwear-associated alopecia, fostering patient trust and well-being. Recommendations include altering headwear styles, using different materials, and varying hair styling techniques to reduce tension on the scalp.
