Patients with alopecia areata exhibit a significantly increased relative risk of retinal abnormalities, indicating a potential shared mechanism involving the collapse of immune privilege. Despite this increased relative risk, the absolute risk remains low, suggesting that routine screening for retinal abnormalities in these patients should be guided by the presence of symptoms rather than conducted universally.
