TLDR Effective sleep apnea treatment may reverse cognitive decline in Alzheimer's.
This case study of a 57-year-old Navy veteran with multiple health issues, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), demonstrated that consistent use of CPAP therapy led to significant cognitive improvements. Initially diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer's changes, the patient showed enhanced cognitive function and mood after adhering to CPAP therapy for over 7 hours nightly. Neuropsychological testing and FDG-PET scans confirmed these improvements, suggesting that CPAP treatment could enhance brain function in patients with OSA and dementia, even without standard memory medications. This case highlighted the potential of routine OSA screening and CPAP therapy as a novel treatment approach for dementia.
