TLDR White Piedra mainly affects young women and is linked to hair-related factors.
This review of 131 cases of White Piedra reveals that the condition predominantly affects young females, with 91.6% of cases being female and most patients 18 years or younger. The majority of studies were conducted in Brazil, India, and Mexico. Trichosporon spp was identified as the most common etiologic agent in 34.3% of cases. Most patients (94.6%) were asymptomatic, with nodules being the most common clinical feature. Predisposing factors include long hair, use of hair bands or accessories, and wet hair. The study highlights the challenge in evaluating treatment effectiveness due to limited follow-up data, concluding that White Piedra is linked to hair-related factors in young women.
