TLDR Ferritin and vitamin B12 deficiencies are common causes of hair loss in women aged 18-45.
This study of 2,851 female patients with telogen effluvium (TE) at Dicle University found that laboratory tests are essential for identifying the causes of TE, with ferritin and vitamin B12 deficiencies being common, especially in women aged 18-45. Ferritin deficiency, often linked to menstrual periods, is a crucial marker due to its role in hair follicle metabolism. The study did not find significant relationships between TE and serum iron, folic acid, or hemoglobin levels. It suggests that age-specific laboratory testing could be cost-effective, as folic acid deficiency is rare in those under 18 or over 45.
