TLDR Long COVID is a big health problem needing more research and better treatments.
This narrative review examines the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 variants and long COVID, a multisystem disease with symptoms like fatigue and neurological issues, affecting an estimated 10% of COVID-19 patients globally. It highlights that variants such as Alpha and Omicron have different impacts on symptom severity, with Omicron linked to fewer long COVID symptoms. Risk factors include age, female gender, and severe initial illness. Current management is symptom-based, with some efficacy from antiviral and anti-inflammatory treatments, while vaccination reduces risk. The review stresses the need for targeted research and individualized treatment strategies to address the medical and economic impacts of long COVID.
