RNA Sequencing Reveals lncRNA-Mediated Non-Mendelian Inheritance of Feather Growth Change in Chickens

    This study investigated the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the non-Mendelian inheritance of feather growth in chickens. By comparing the expression profiles of lncRNAs in early- and late-feathering chickens, researchers identified differentially expressed lncRNAs that functioned through cis-acting mechanisms or as part of the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network. Key findings included the identification of 53 upregulated and 43 downregulated lncRNAs in early-feathering cocks versus late-feathering cocks, and 58 upregulated and 109 downregulated lncRNAs in early-feathering hens versus late-feathering hens. These lncRNAs were associated with several signaling pathways, including the TGF-β, Wnt, and Jak-STAT pathways. The study highlighted the significant role of the lncRNA ENSGALG00000047626 in regulating the expression of SSTR2 via gga-miR-1649-5p, providing insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying feather growth that do not follow traditional genetic laws.
