TLDR Androgen and Wnt signals are crucial for developing and functioning male genitalia and erectile tissues.
The review highlights the critical roles of androgen and Wnt signals in the development and function of external genitalia (ExG) and erectile tissues. Androgen is essential for male-type ExG and urethral formation, as well as the development and regulation of erectile tissue and erection duration. Wnt signals work in conjunction with androgen for ExG organogenesis and are crucial for regulating mesenchymal cells in erectile tissue. The study also notes the impact of stress signals, continuous erection, and lymphatic characteristics of erectile vessels. The findings are supported by experimental strategies using histological and molecular analyses with conditional mutant mice.
