TLDR Scalp edema may be a new variant of conditions reacting to scarring alopecia like LPP.
This document discusses a case of significant scalp edema in a middle-aged female with lichen planopilaris (LPP), a condition characterized by inflammatory scarring hair loss. The patient exhibited diffuse thinning and perifollicular scale on the frontal scalp, along with edema and bogginess. A biopsy confirmed LPP, and the case suggests that scalp edema may represent a new variant of hyperplastic or edematous scalp conditions as a reactive process to primary conditions like scarring alopecia. The study emphasizes that lipedematous alopecia (LA) should be considered a diagnosis of exclusion after ruling out treatable conditions such as LPP.
