TLDR Scalp cooling can help prevent hair loss in about half of chemotherapy patients.
Scalp cooling was found to reduce or prevent hair loss in approximately 50% of patients undergoing chemotherapy, depending on the type of chemotherapy used. Pharmacological interventions were not sufficient to prevent hair loss. Research conducted by the Leiden University Medical Center, Northwest Hospital Group, and the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organization, in collaboration with various hospitals in the Netherlands, investigated factors influencing the effectiveness of scalp cooling. Optimizing the scalp cooling method could further decrease the incidence of hair loss.
