TLDR Silicones are important for hair care but should be used wisely to balance benefits and environmental concerns.
Silicones are vital in hair care for their protective and conditioning properties, forming a film over hair to reduce friction, prevent moisture loss, and enhance shine. However, concerns about buildup from water-insoluble silicones and environmental impacts of cyclic silicones exist. Recent advancements, like water-dispersible and nano-encapsulated silicones, aim to address these issues while maintaining benefits. The review stresses the importance of selecting suitable products for different hair types and preventing buildup. It calls for education on silicone benefits and proper use, advocating for a balanced approach that combines efficacy with environmental responsibility. Fourth-generation silicones and innovative surfactants aim to reduce environmental impact and optimize ingredient delivery.
