TLDR Skin changes like dryness and hair loss can signal hypothyroidism before tests confirm it.
This study conducted at a tertiary care center in Eastern India involved 200 patients with primary hypothyroidism and aimed to identify cutaneous manifestations associated with the condition. The findings revealed that skin changes such as altered texture (53%), dry skin (48.5%), and generalized pruritus (42.5%) were common, with pigmentation issues like vitiligo and melasma also noted. Hair changes were observed in 39.5% of patients, including diffuse hair loss (17.5%) and alopecia areata (4.5%). The study concluded that these skin and hair conditions might precede the biochemical diagnosis of hypothyroidism, highlighting the importance of considering hypothyroidism in patients presenting with these symptoms.
