TLDR SLE is likely one disease with various symptoms, not multiple distinct diseases.
This study analyzed a cohort of 1,196 SLE patients to explore relationships between classification criteria items and clusters. It identified 10 clusters but found no distinct patterns beyond antibody-organ relationships. Significant, though weak, associations were observed within domains, such as between antibodies to double-stranded DNA and Sm, low complements and lupus nephritis, and antiphospholipid antibodies and thrombocytopenia. The findings suggest that SLE is more likely a single disease entity with various inflammatory organ manifestations rather than a syndrome of distinct diseases. The study supports the domain structure of the EULAR/ACR criteria and highlights the complexity of SLE, indicating that its manifestations may result from stochastic processes rather than fixed combinations.
