TLDR Soluble CD83 can treat alopecia areata by activating immune cells.
This study investigates the role of soluble CD83 (sCD83) in treating alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune condition causing hair loss. Researchers found that AA patients have a deficiency in sCD83, which correlates with disease severity. In a mouse model, sCD83 supplementation reversed AA symptoms and promoted regulatory T cell (Treg) proliferation. The study highlights that indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) activity in outer root sheath keratinocytes (ORSKs) is crucial for sCD83-mediated Treg activation, with thioredoxin (TRX) potentially acting as a receptor for sCD83. These findings suggest that sCD83 has therapeutic potential for AA by modulating immune responses.
