TLDR The gene GJA1 is important for regulating coarse hair density in goats.
This study on the Dazu black goat provides insights into the genetic regulation of coarse hair density (CHD) by analyzing 905 skin images, 33 skin transcriptomes, 272 whole-genome sequences, and 182 downloaded transcriptomes. It reveals that hair shaft thickening and density decline are linked to trunk skin expansion. The research identifies 572 differentially expressed genes and 25 significant SNPs, with a focus on the gene GJA1 on chromosome 9. Six genes, including GJA1 and GPRC5D, are highlighted for their roles in skin and hair biology. These genes are highly expressed in hair follicles, particularly in follicular stem cells and dermal papilla cells, indicating their importance in folliculogenesis and structural maintenance. The study's findings, supported by cross-validation with public datasets, enhance understanding of hair density regulation in animals.

Minoxidil with alcohol and propylene glycol was more effective than non-alcohol versions, and RU58841 worked best in a non-water-based solution. Oral finasteride showed better results than topical, despite side effects; microneedling and tretinoin worsened hair loss, and PRP was only helpful when younger.

Finasteride is effective for hair regrowth, especially on the crown, but can cause side effects like reduced libido and erectile dysfunction in some users. Opinions are mixed, with some reporting positive results without side effects and others experiencing significant issues.

A 24-year-old person who is worried about their hair loss after 14 months of taking finasteride and 11 months of minoxidil. Replies to the post suggested sticking with their current regimen, that shedding from one part may not be telogen effluvium, and that shedding is normal with these drugs and they should evaluate in two to three months.
