TLDR Higher oxidative stress markers are linked to hair loss in post-COVID-19 patients.
This study, conducted on 90 participants, explored the correlation between soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in post-COVID-19 patients with telogen effluvium (TE). It found that patients with TE had significantly higher serum sRAGE levels and lower HO-1 levels compared to those without hair loss and healthy individuals. The severity of TE was associated with increased sRAGE and decreased HO-1 levels, suggesting that oxidative stress and a reduced antioxidative response may contribute to TE in post-COVID-19 patients. The study suggests that sRAGE and HO-1 could serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for TE, though it acknowledges the need for larger studies to confirm these findings.
