TLDR Stress is often linked to alopecia areata, and education can help patients cope better.
This study surveyed 96 participants with alopecia areata, mostly female, to explore their perceptions of stress, illness, and stigma. It found that 54% believed stress contributed to their condition, with 35% of dermatologists agreeing. Participants who linked stress to their condition felt more personal control. Greater stigma was associated with poorer perceived consequences, stronger emotional responses, and lower disease understanding. The study suggests that educational programs in routine care could enhance patients' understanding and coping strategies.
