Sugar Surfactant-Based Shampoos

The study formulated and characterized shampoos using sugar-derived surfactants, specifically alkyl polyglucosides decyl glucoside and coco-glucoside, and compared them to a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) control. The sugar surfactant-based shampoos exhibited higher pH values, which were adjusted with lactic acid, and demonstrated superior foamability and wettability compared to SLES. They showed Newtonian behavior with suitable viscosity, low cytotoxicity in human keratinocytes and retinal cell lines, and facilitated easier hair combing when Polyquaternium-7 was used as a conditioner. Additionally, these shampoos provided efficient and gentle hair washing, with favorable sensorial analysis results. The findings supported the use of sugar surfactants in shampoo formulations due to their positive impact on hair cleansing properties and overall efficacy.
