Serum Level of Survivin in Patients with Alopecia Areata and Its Association with Disease Severity and Progression

    TLDR Lower survivin levels in blood are linked to more severe and progressing alopecia areata.
    The study investigated the serum level of survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis protein, in 38 patients with alopecia areata (AA) compared to 38 healthy controls. Results showed that AA patients had significantly lower serum survivin levels than controls, with even lower levels in those with progressive disease compared to stable disease. A significant negative correlation was found between survivin levels and both the severity and duration of AA. The findings suggest that survivin may play a role in the immune pathogenesis of AA and could serve as a predictor for the disease's severity and progression.
