TLDR The hydrogel with sericin and guava extract significantly improved burn wound healing in mice.
This study investigates the wound healing potential of a sericin-based self-healing and stretchable hydrogel loaded with Psidium guajava L. extract for treating full-thickness burn wounds in mice. The hydrogel, particularly Hydrogel 4 (3% sericin + 3% P. guajava L.), showed significant improvements in wound healing, achieving 89.66% healing by day 15 compared to 37.16% in controls. The hydrogel demonstrated high swelling capacity and effective absorption of wound exudates, reducing infection risk. Histological analysis confirmed collagen deposition and hair follicle regeneration. Hematological and serum analyses indicated reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, with increased anti-inflammatory markers and antioxidants. Hydrogel 4 notably increased SOD levels by 3.47-fold and reduced MDA by 68%, highlighting its efficacy in mitigating oxidative stress and promoting healing, making it a promising candidate for advanced wound dressing applications.
