TLDR Communities adapt and reinterpret the landscape of the former Stutthof concentration camp, balancing memory and identity.
The project "Sztutowo czy Stutthof? Oswajanie krajobrazu kulturowego" analyzed the transformation of the cultural landscape of the former KL Stutthof concentration camp and its surroundings from World War II to the present. Initiated in 2009, it used ethnological and archaeological methods, including interviews and surveys, to study local communities' interactions with a landscape marked by historical trauma. The research highlighted the interplay between memory, identity, and space, focusing on how communities adapt to and reinterpret the landscape. It also examined the role of small sacral architecture as symbols of cultural adaptation. The project aimed to foster understanding and appreciation of the site's history through collaboration with the Stutthof Museum and academic institutions.
