Prevalence of Telogen Effluvium in Egyptian Women with Post-COVID-19 Viral Infection
TLDR COVID-19 infection is linked to temporary hair loss in Egyptian women.
The study investigated the prevalence of telogen effluvium (TE) in 500 Egyptian women who had COVID-19 infections. It found a statistically significant association between hospitalization for COVID-19 and the occurrence of TE (P = 0.001). Early symptoms of TE post-COVID-19 included lower hair density, empty hair follicles, and short regrowing hair. While the study does not confirm COVID-19 as the sole cause of acute TE, it emphasizes the importance of considering COVID-19 in patients with hair loss and a history of infection. Acute TE, although typically temporary, can significantly impact mental health, especially in those previously affected by COVID-19.
