TLDR Testosterone reduces heart damage and inflammation after injury.
The study evaluated the effects of testosterone and its metabolic inhibition on myocardial remodeling in gonadectomized rats after ischemia/reperfusion injury. Testosterone administration reduced myocardial damage, inflammation, and MMP-3 and 13 expressions. Finasteride further decreased scar tissue and inflammation, while 4-hydroxyandrostenedione increased these parameters. The findings suggested that testosterone's effects were not direct, as inhibiting both aromatase and 5α-reductase did not significantly alter myocardial injury.
