TLDR Athletic trainers should understand and support the medical needs of transgender and gender-diverse patients.
This literature review aimed to educate athletic trainers (ATs) on their role in providing care to transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) patients, focusing on medical affirmation processes and compliance considerations for medical eligibility. It highlighted the importance of ATs understanding gender-affirming hormone therapy, surgical options, and the general health needs of TGD individuals. By working collaboratively within an interprofessional care team, ATs could help reduce health disparities and facilitate compliance with evolving sports policies, thereby improving care for TGD patients.
