TLDR TheDES improve drug delivery through the skin but need more safety checks.
Therapeutic deep eutectic solvents (TheDES) are highlighted as promising multifunctional transdermal delivery systems that enhance drug solubility, permeability, and bioavailability while minimizing toxicity and skin irritation. TheDES can integrate active pharmaceutical ingredients directly into their structure, improving drug delivery and reducing the need for additional excipients. They offer significant improvements over traditional methods, showing promise in applications like pain management, infectious diseases, and oncology. TheDES systems have demonstrated increased solubility and permeability for drugs such as ibuprofen and ketoconazole, improved wound healing, and enhanced therapeutic efficacy in cancer treatments. However, concerns about long-term dermatological safety and potential skin irritation remain, necessitating further research and systematic safety evaluations.
