Therapeutic Effectiveness in Alopecia Areata: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Paulo Celso Budri [UNIFESP] Freire
TLDR Minoxidil 5% helps with patchy alopecia areata, but more research is needed.
The systematic review and meta-analysis on alopecia areata (AA) evaluated the effectiveness and safety of various interventions in children and adults. The study included 59 trials with 73 topical and systemic interventions. Minoxidil 5% showed a significant benefit over placebo for focal AA in both children and adults, with moderate evidence quality. Zinc sulfate and clobetasol propionate also showed significant differences over placebo, but with very low-quality evidence. High potency corticosteroids, minoxidil, and other treatments like bimatoprost and aromatherapy showed statistically significant results for patchy AA, but not for AA totalis and universalis. The study concluded that due to the low methodological quality and limited sample sizes, the evidence was not conclusive, and further research with better quality and larger sample sizes is needed.
