Characterization of Thyroid Disorders in Alopecia Areata Patients: A Cross-Sectional Evaluation

    N. Nair, Rani Mathew, Smitha Ancy Varghese, Anuja Elizabeth George
This study investigated thyroid dysfunction in 32 patients with alopecia areata compared to 32 caregivers without the condition. It found that 25% of alopecia areata patients had hypothyroidism, significantly higher than the 6.25% in the comparison group. Autoimmune thyroid dysfunction was present in 18.75% of cases but none in the comparison group. Despite these findings, no significant link was found between thyroid status and the clinical profile or severity of alopecia areata. The study suggests routine thyroid screening for alopecia areata patients, as thyroid dysfunction was often detected without symptoms. However, the small sample size and hospital-based setting may limit the generalizability of the results.
