TLDR Adults can get scalp fungal infections, needing quick treatment to prevent spread and hair loss.
Tinea capitis, a fungal infection of the scalp commonly seen in children, can also affect adults, as demonstrated by a case in Brazil involving Trichophyton violaceum. The infection is characterized by red, scaly, and itchy patches, along with hair breakage and loss. The review highlights the importance of rapid identification and appropriate treatment due to the ease of transmission and potential for drug resistance. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications such as ketoconazole, fluconazole, terbinafine, and griseofulvin over 2 to 6 weeks, sometimes supplemented with antibiotics and corticosteroids. Effective treatment can prevent significant emotional distress caused by alopecia and ulcerative lesions.
