TLDR Topical dapsone gel reduced flare-ups in folliculitis decalvans without side effects.
This retrospective cohort study evaluated the effectiveness of topical dapsone in treating folliculitis decalvans (FD) in 14 patients over a mean period of 30 months. The study found a significant reduction in the frequency of flareups from 0.13 to 0.03 per month after introducing dapsone gel 5% applied three times a week. No adverse effects were reported, and the treatment was well tolerated. The study suggested that topical dapsone could be a promising alternative to systemic antibiotics, especially in the context of increasing antibiotic resistance. However, limitations included the small sample size and the retrospective, uncontrolled nature of the study.
