Trained Immunity And Local Innate Immune Memory In The Lung

    TLDR Lung immune cells can be trained to better fight infections after a virus.
    The study by Yao et al. showed that trained immunity could be locally induced in alveolar macrophages in the lung after a viral infection, initiated by IFNγ release from effector CD8+ lymphocytes. This led to enhanced defense against subsequent bacterial infections, marked by increased glycolysis and chemokine release. The research offered insights into innate immune memory mechanisms, suggesting induction both centrally in the bone marrow and peripherally in tissues, which could impact future therapeutic strategies.
