Trichoscopic Evaluation of Focal Non-Cicatricial Alopecia in Egyptian Children

    TLDR Using dermoscopy improves diagnosis of scalp and hair disorders in children.
    The study evaluated 200 Egyptian children aged 2 to 18 years with focal non-cicatricial alopecia using trichoscopy, a noninvasive diagnostic tool. The most common diagnoses were alopecia areata (42%) and tinea capitis (40.5%), followed by trichotillomania (8%) and tractional alopecia (7%). Trichoscopy identified specific features for each condition, such as exclamation mark hair in alopecia areata and comma hair in tinea capitis, aiding in accurate diagnosis and management. The study concludes that routine use of dermoscopy enhances diagnostic capabilities for scalp and hair disorders beyond simple clinical inspection.
