TLDR Truncated hHb1 keratin may play a role in breast cancer cell transformation.
The study investigated the expression of a truncated form of hHb1 hair keratin in human breast carcinomas. It was found that breast carcinomas ectopically expressed a 5'-truncated mRNA of hHb1, which was restricted to malignant epithelial cells. The in vitro study suggested that this truncated mRNA could be translated, indicating a potential role in epithelial cell transformation. The hHb1 gene is located in a chromosome region (12q11-q13) known for breakpoints in solid tumors, suggesting it might be a target for genetic alterations in cancer.
