TLDR Type 1 diabetes may cause certain autoimmune diseases in Europeans.
The study investigates the causal relationship between type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and autoimmune skin diseases using Mendelian randomization analysis. It finds a causal link between T1DM and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and multiple sclerosis (MS) in European populations, but not between T1DM and SLE in East Asian populations. The findings suggest the importance of monitoring immunological markers for SLE, RA, and MS in patients with T1DM and implementing preventive measures accordingly.
