TLDR Valproic acid can cause weight gain and hair texture changes.
The document described a case report of a 19-year-old female patient who experienced significant weight gain and changes in hair texture while being treated with valproic acid for seizures. The patient gained 13 kg and her hair changed from light, fine blonde to thicker, darker, and curly while on a daily dose of 1000 mg of valproic acid. Upon reducing the dose to 500 mg daily, she lost 7 kg, but her hair texture remained unchanged. Despite these side effects, the patient chose to continue the medication due to its effectiveness in controlling her absence, myoclonic, and tonic-clonic seizures, which had not been achieved with other drugs. Weight gain was observed in up to 20% of patients treated with valproic acid, and changes in hair texture were found in up to 9% of patients.
