TLDR Low vitamin D levels may worsen or cause alopecia areata.
This systematic review investigates the link between vitamin D deficiency and alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune hair loss disorder. Analyzing eight studies from an initial pool of 1,751 articles, the review found an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and the severity, extent, and pattern of AA. The findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency could contribute to the development or worsening of AA.
