Assessment of Vitamin D Levels in Patients with Alopecia Areata: A Case-Control Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital in North India

This study examined the link between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and Alopecia Areata (AA) in a North Indian cohort, including 44 AA patients and 44 healthy controls. It found that AA patients had significantly lower median vitamin D levels (17.10 ng/mL) compared to controls (22.60 ng/mL), with 54.55% of AA patients being vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D deficiency increased the odds of having AA by 3.22 times, especially among urban residents. Although no correlation was found between vitamin D levels and disease severity, the study suggests that screening for vitamin D deficiency could be beneficial in managing AA.
