Warfarin, marketed under various trade names such as Coumadin and Marevan, was used as an anticoagulant for conditions like thromboembolic disease and pulmonary embolism. It had a variable half-life of 1.5-2.5 days and interacted with numerous substances, including common medications and herbal remedies, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. Notable side effects included skin conditions like alopecia, which affected more than 10% of users, and other dermatological reactions such as purpura and dermatitis. Additionally, warfarin was associated with serious adverse effects like hemorrhage, gangrene, and cardiovascular issues, highlighting the importance of careful monitoring during its use.
