TLDR Permanent makeup fades over time and needs reapplication.
The study highlights that permanent makeup (PMU) is not a lifetime application due to its tendency to fade more quickly than traditional tattoos. Conducted on SKH-1 mice, the research found that PMU fades within 1-2 years because it is applied more superficially and consists of larger inorganic particles, which are more prone to oxidation and removal by the skin's natural processes. In contrast, traditional tattoo inks, made of smaller organic nanoparticles, penetrate deeper and remain stable, resulting in lifelong permanence. The study emphasizes the need for professional application and suggests further research to improve PMU formulations for enhanced longevity and safety.
