What Silk Stockings Cannot Conceal: An Examination of Women's Attitudes Towards Body Hair and Its Removal

    Katinka Szabó
TLDR Hungarian women feel societal pressure to remove body hair.
This study investigates the attitudes of Hungarian women towards body hair removal and the societal norms surrounding it. Through the analysis of hair-removal advertisements and focus group interviews with 28 female university students in Budapest, the research explores how women interpret their own and society's relationship to hair removal norms. The study does not focus on the frequency of hair removal but rather on the social reactions and typical patterns associated with it. The goal is to offer theoretical frameworks for a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, utilizing both classical sociological theories and feminist critical perspectives.
